Indivisible on CBS’s Political Firing of Stephen Colbert: ‘Let’s call this what it is: political censorship.’

Washington, D.C. — Today, Indivisible’s Chief Campaigns Officer, Sarah Dohl, released the following statement in response to CBS’s political firing of Stephen Colbert:

“Let’s call this what it is: political censorship.

“CBS didn’t just cancel a late-night show. They silenced one of the sharpest, most consistent critics of Donald Trump—and they did it in an era where authoritarian politics are gaining ground fast.

“This wasn’t about ratings. It wasn’t about rebranding. It was about appeasement. Just as CBS’s parent company handed Trump $16 million to settle a spurious lawsuit, this was about preemptively bowing to a regime that demands obedience.

“Comedy is supposed to be dangerous to the powerful. That’s the point. When corporate media bends the knee to a would-be authoritarian by purging the comedians who speak truth, it sends a chilling message: Trump is off-limits.

“We reject that message. We stand with Stephen Colbert—and with every voice this regime wants silenced.

“This is just the beginning. If CBS thought they could quietly pull the plug, they were wrong.”
